Environmental Centre
Advancing education.
PSMI is developing education offerings for youth, post secondary (including diploma and/or degree programs) and public consumption. Programs will focus on practical solutions to contemporary marine problems, taking a system-wide perspective that includes all related aspects of marine ecosystems (such as freshwater spawning habitat, nitrogen and sediment levels in major freshwater systems, or climate change). Structural components of the Environmental Centre will include laboratories, library and data centre, fish hatchery and a range of classroom facilities. Incorporation of First Nations traditional and contemporary knowledge will be a key feature.
Advancing collaboration.
Our approach is one of inclusion. Many people are seeking solutions to balance benefits to society, economy and environment. We intend to actively foster inclusion of First Nations students, researchers and workers on site and in associated outreach facilities. Youth in local schools will have access to world class facilities and close ties to advanced research and practical restoration. Existing not-for-profit and post secondary educational institutions who are actively working in this field will benefit from increased communication and closer relationships. Opportunities for public involvement and cultural events or celebrations will also be a natural fit. Overall, this will result in an exciting, highly productive action-oriented environment.
Advancing restoration.
On-site features of the Environmental Centre will include fish hatchery facilities, a habitat restoration lab and a disaster recovery research lab and response team. As much as possible, these facilities will be shared among all stakeholder groups to maximize benefits and opportunities to the entire community.
Site features.
The Environmental Centre will be a visionary, world class facility. Suitable facilities will offer adequate space to house several organizations, labs, classrooms and public lecture spaces. Additional features include green building or renovations and showcase sustainability features such as on-site food production, waste management and native vegetation.
